The nonprofit in question appears to be https://www.littlewindphoneproject.org and while I see no reason to doubt their sincerity nor competence, I think they’re fundamentally missing the point. Wind phones gain from the DIY model; frictionless is not always better.
That’s a very fair point, and for many individuals, the DIY journey is a deeply meaningful part of the healing process. That’s why we, at The Little Wind Phone Project, offer free guidance, plans, and petition support for anyone who wants to build their own from scratch.
At the same time, we’ve learned that not everyone has access to woodworking tools, fabrication skills, or the physical energy while navigating profound grief. Offering pre-built wind phones at-cost isn’t about removing heart from the process—it’s about making sure that lack of technical resources or tools doesn’t stop a grieving individual or community from having a place to heal. Both paths are valid, and our mission is simply to support whichever road a person needs to take. Every installation involves a collaborative process, hand-sourcing vintage phones, design guidance and personal dedication to honor loved ones.
